6th Annual Drowning Impact Awareness Month – August 2009

YOU can prevent child drownings,

a top cause of injury-related death for Arizona’s children.

Arizona is second in the nation for child drownings, and every loss is preventable.

16 children drowned last year, in Maricopa County alone.

- Or, non-Maricopa County –

22 children drowned in Arizona in 2007.

August is one of the highest months for child drowning incidents. Drowning Impact Awareness Month is a purple ribbon campaign during the month of August, to:

  • Remind everyone to take basic steps to prevent child drownings, like shutting pool gates and watching children closely around water.

  • Recognize the impact that fatal and non-fatal drownings have upon children, families, public safety providers, and the entire community.

The Drowning Impact Awareness Month campaign includes:

  • Purple ribbons distributed for free, at info@WaterSafeKids.com (Send us your name and address), Phoenix Children’s Hospital, businesses, fire departments, and community centers throughout Arizona.
  • Dozens of proclamations, declaring this August, the 6th Annual “Drowning Impact Awareness Month,” signed by the governor and mayors across the state.

Awareness is free!

Wear your purple ribbon to remember the impact of child drownings,

and commit to be water safe this August.

Water Safe Kids has special water safety information on our website (www.WaterSafeKids.com), facebook (facebook - WaterSafeKids) and blog (blog - WaterSafeKids) this month. We will proudly wear our purple ribbons, and keep plenty on hand for our customers.

Be a part of this important effort with us. To learn more about our commitment to drowning prevention, view the proclamation, or learn where you can pick up a purple ribbon, visit www.phoenixchildrens.com.

Summer is officially here!!!

June 21st was officially the first day of summer. Please take extra precautions and watch your kids around water. Here are few tips that will guide you along.

Please visit our website for additional water safety information.

http://www.watersafekids.com/waterSafetyMain.php

Pool Safety Tips

1. Designated Pool Watcher: Have a designated ADULT as the "pool watcher" for a specified amount of time that will exclusively watch kids in the pool until replaced by another pool watcher.

2. No pool hose: Remove hose from pool when not in use. Even a skilled swimmer can get tangled up.

3. Pool jets: Turn pool jets toward shallow end of pool or steps. A child in need of help can at least be pushed toward the shallow end of pool or steps to help in survival.

4. Hard Cover: Always use a HARD COVER for hot tubs and spas when not in use.

5. Outdoor phone: This is a must to avoid having to run in the house and become distracted from children playing near the pool.

6. No Flotation Devices: Any floating device for children can be very harmful. They provide a false sense of security. Young children begin to believe that they can swim and will be more tempted to jump in without the floaties, tubes, etc.

7. Alarms on doors: Arm any door leading to the pool area with an audible alarm that goes off when door is opened.

8. High Locks: Use locks on doors and windows. Six foot high is recommended.

9. Safety Fences: Make sure they remain locked.

10. Pool Covers: Be cautious!! Kids can easily get stuck underneath and make survival impossible.

11. Survival Swim Program: Enroll your children in a reputable swim program that focuses on survival (www.WaterSafeKids.com)

12. CPR: All Adults should learn CPR.

13. Supervision: Always supervise your kids around water!!!

Self-Rescue™ Swimming Lessons for Babies and Toddlers

Infant Swimming Resource completes seven million lessons with a 100 percent safety record

Winter Park, FL – March 2, 2009 – Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), the safest provider of self-rescue swimming lessons for babies and toddlers from six months to six years old, announced it has taught more than 175,000 children and delivered seven million lessons with a 100 percent safety record and survival rate. ISR provides researched instruction techniques and a drowning prevention strategy for parents to ensure that young children are learning self-rescue skills and the confidence required to safely enjoy the water.

~

In a study announced today (March 2, 2009) by the American Medical Association (AMA) in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine 1, entitled “Association between Swimming Lessons and Drowning in Childhood,” it concluded:

“Participation in formal swimming lessons was associated with an 88% reduction in the risk of drowning in the 1- to 4-year-old children, although our estimates were imprecise and 95% confidence intervals included risk reductions ranging from 3% to 99%.”

~

“Drowning ranks as a leading killer for children under four in the United States and it is imperative that parents find a swim instruction program that is teaching critical self-rescue skills,” said Harvey Barnett, Ph.D., founder of ISR. “For more than 40 years, ISR has been training children how to survive if they were to accidentally end up in the water alone.”

Water Safe Kids is proud to offer the Infant Swimming Resource Program. The ISR lesson experience is a comprehensive six-week program where each lesson is customized for the child as they are safely guided through the learning process.

  • Six months to 12 months - infants learn to hold their breath under water, roll onto their backs and float unassisted.

  • One year to six years - learn how to hold their breath underwater, swim with their head down and eyes open, roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe, and roll back over to resume swimming until the reach the side of the pool and can crawl out. Once skilled, children practice these techniques fully clothed.

About Infant Swimming Resource

Founded in 1966, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is nationally recognized as the safest provider of swimming lessons for children six months to six years of age. With a passionate focus on baby swimming safety, and as the nation’s only behaviorally-based swim instruction program, ISR designed its program for parents who are dedicated to their child’s safety, education and developmental needs. Our emphasis on ensuring that not one more child drowns is founded on Dr. Harvey Barnett’s self-rescue training, proven to help young children survive in a drowning scenario. ISR’s nationwide network of highly qualified, certified Instructors has successfully trained more than 175,000 babies and toddlers and delivered more than seven million lessons with a 100 percent safety and survival rate, with zero injuries and 788 documented cases of a child’s self-rescue using ISR techniques. Pool Safety Circle Time (Preschools, Daycare Centers & Churches)

Dear Parents,

In a few short months families will begin opening up their swimming pools to enjoy the summer. Before that happens...We need your help in raising water safety awareness.

In Arizona, the safety of our children around water is a primary concern for parents. Even if they don’t own a pool, there is one nearby. Recognizing this ever-present danger, Water Safe Kids is pleased to offer “Pool Safety Circle Time” presentations to preschools, daycare centers and churches in time for Spring and the beginning of the swim season.

We've had great interest from organizations thus far and are continuing to schedule Pool Safety Circle Time presentations through March. If you feel your school, preschool, daycare center or church may benefit please forward this on to your contact or let me know and I would be happy to contact them to discuss in more detail. There is no cost to them. This is part of our water safety awareness outreach.

The objective of this 20-30 minute interactive program is to encourage children ages 3-6 years to think about pool safety and express their own thoughts and ideas on the topic.

During the session we explore, what we like about the pool and what could happen if we are unable to swim. Together we think of rules for the pool and what to do in an emergency. The children watch a short DVD of a small infant and young child performing learned self rescue skills in the water.

Each child receives a letter for their parents explaining what we talked about and as an invitation to continue the topic at home. This letter also helps parents evaluate their own pool safety procedures and encourages adopting “layers” of protection around their pool.

Thank you for your help,

Carlos and Tammy Machado

P.S. New for 2009!!! We are honored to work with the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation and will be donating a copy of their book – “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim” to each daycare center, preschool and church. The book has been featured on CNN, CBS and Fox and conveys a powerful message in simple terms. It is accompanied by a CD for audio of the story and the “safety song”.

Spring is Around the Corner - Time to Start Thinking About Refresher Classes

Hello Parents,

Hope all of you had a great holiday season. It is officially the middle of January and we are preparing to enter this year's swim season. It won't be long before Spring Break is here and the kids are asking about swimming.

Included in the initial ISR registration fee all of you paid was a free registration update. In order to conduct refresher training we need to update registrations. Within the next couple of days each of you will receive your original registration link. If you still have it, great...you can log on and update right away. Not to worry about scheduling right now. We will coordinate that in the coming weeks. If you choose to update your child's registration before receiving the link please click on "REFRESHER COURSE" and not NEW ENROLLMENT. Some of you registered early last year, so it is important that you update right away to avoid a new registration fee.

Keep an eye on your email box for the registration link. In the meantime, please call or email if you have any questions.
